I’m a freelance travel writer and digital content creator from Sydney, Australia, currently based in Auckland, New Zealand.
Digital Content Creation
By day, I’m a senior content writer for a content marketing agency in the Auckland CBD, writing things like blog articles, whitepapers, e-books, eDMs, landing pages and other collateral for businesses across a wide range of industries. I write about every topic you can imagine: travel, home furnishings, events, customer loyalty, international shipping, construction, superannuation, investing and property. Some of my clients are small businesses, and others are global powerhouses. Whatever the topic or sector, my job is to ensure that the content people are getting is both compelling and optimised for search.
I’ve been engaged in digital content creation for the last two and a half years. While living abroad in Europe, I undertook a communications internship with the European Union in Gdańsk, Poland, and also took on an exciting role as content manager for award-winning travel startup, GoCambio, based in the tiny Irish seaside town of Youghal.
In 2016, I won a Europe-wide blogging competition and was flown to Brussels as a fully accredited journalist to cover the European Week of Regions and Cities. My blogs on this event, which focused on the role of storytelling and women’s empowerment, were published by the European Commission and shared widely on social media, and my experience here was the catalyst that led me to realise I wanted to be writing full-time. That’s when I moved to New Zealand and made the switch from a career in academia to one in online content creation.
I was born in Sydney, Australia to Aussie/Kiwi parents. When I was four, my family moved to the UK. Over the past 27 years or so, I’ve also lived in southeast Asia (Vietnam and Cambodia), Sweden and now call New Zealand home. I’ve travelled to over 40 countries – solo, with friends, with strangers – and in many different ways. I love immersing myself in other cultures, learning new languages (Vietnamese, Swedish, Russian and Icelandic, to name a few that I’ve dabbled in), and trying different foods and teas in the places I visit.
My extensive experience of living, working and travelling abroad has given me an appreciation for places, people and different cultures, and is the inspiration for much of my writing. I’ve published travel pieces for independent travel guides such as Routes North, travel abroad websites like GoAbroad, and my personal travel blog Researcher Gone Rogue.
I also have a passion for tea, as anyone who knows me can attest to! I’ve recently started working on a fun new project called The Travelling Tea Leaf, which will document my tea drinking adventures and share what I learn about this wonderful beverage in different places that I visit.
